‘Tis the season to be jolly?

Christmas treeWhen we think of Christmas we usually conjure up images of a white-bearded Santa, replete with white beard, glasses and those rosy cheeks. For some of us though those red cheeks will be a cumbersome reality – and often an embarrassing one – as rosacea triggers abound at Christmas time.

For the 1 in 10 sufferers the festive period is beset with culprits that exacerbate the problem – these can include stress, spicy or rich foods and alcohol. For many, cooking in a hot kitchen, with lots on family and tasks to juggle, drinking and eating a lot will cause an embarrassing flare up or red face.

Rosacea is a common condition but because it affects the face it can cause huge embarrassment and distress to the sufferer – who may have a permanently blotchy or red face or otherwise suffer from flushing easily. Being slightly stressed, or even having one glass of wine, can make the problem worse or increase the redness and flushing considerably. And Christmas is a prime time for these factors.

Although there is no outright cure for rosacea there are treatments available that can help to reduce the condition. A dermatologist or doctor can prescribe topical lotions such as Finacea gel, or oral antibiotics in severe cases. Courses of chemical peels or microdermabrasion may also help to alleviate the problem.
