The importance of an SPF moisturiser: benefits and comparisons
With a rumoured British heatwave to be on the horizons over the next few weeks, many of us will be slapping on the sun cream to protect our skin from those harmful UV rays. It has been drummed into us in recent years that it is important to protect our skin, but what do you need to look for when choosing a sunscreen or moisturiser?
What is an SPF and why have it in a moisturiser?
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) refers to the amount of time you can stay in the sun without your skin burning. When searching for a sunscreen, you are looking for one that will act as a barrier to UVA and UVB rays. Physical SPF ingredients such as Zinc Dioxide, act like a mirror and will reflect the UV away from the skin. This limits the amount of UV rays penetrating the skin giving you better protection.
SPF Moisturiser: High Street VS Cosmeceutical
A number of high street cosmetics will contain SPFs in them, but not nearly enough to protect your skin. These ‘chemical SPFs’ as they are known, can take up to 30 – 60 minutes to start working whereas a physical SPF gives protection the second you apply it to your skin. The texture of a chemical SPF moisturiser tends to be slightly runnier and easier to blend into the skin, whereas a physical SPF moisturiser can appear to be a bit whiter and chalky in texture. There is some concern that solely using chemical SPFs can generate free radical damage, affecting hormones, and in some rare cases, they can trigger the very thing that SPFs are often protecting us from, pigmentation in the skin.
Cosmeceutical products differ in that they target deeper layers within the skin, replenishing and rejuvenating from the inside out, helping to prevent the signs of ageing. These products are not available on the high street due to the high level of active ingredients present, and it is recommended that you have a skin analysis with a qualified practitioner to ensure that the correct product for your skin type is recommended to you.
