Overview
Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment to reduce visibility of thread veins, most commonly found on the legs.

Transcript

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of minor leg thread veins, or spider veins they can be called and it usually affects ladies, on the thighs and later on in life after childbirth or weight gain when these veins start to appear on the legs.

Sclerotherapy is the introduction of a solution which will help to destroy the veins and will improve the appearance of the legs. Sclerotherapy is performed in clinic and again you come into the clinic after a full and thorough consultation just to make sure that you are suitable. It’s the application of a few small injections into the area. Most people when they have it done actually state that it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as they thought it was going to be because it’s just a few injection into the area. The skin looks a little bit red and irritated afterwards but it’s actually very quick and it depends on the extent of the veins that you’ve got to how long it will take.

If you’re having a sclerotherapy treatment done, depending on the extent of the problem, this will determine how many treatments that you need and it could be anything from 2-4 treatments. You come into the clinic and we generally do the treatments about every 6 weeks. It can take a few months for the actual end result to be seen so it isn’t something to have done a few weeks before you’re going on holiday. It’s generally a treatment that we suggest you have done in the winter months because of the number of weeks that it can take for it to actually work.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to reduce the appearance of thread veins found on the legs.

What can be treated with Sclerotherapy?

This treatment is used to remove telangiectasia also known as thread or spider veins. These veins appear when the capillaries, are put under a lot of pressure and become permanently dilated. This means they can be seen through the skin and present themselves as red/purple in colour. Sclerotherapy cannot be used for the removal of varicose veins.

What does the treatment involve?

You will first require a consultation with our Clinical Lead Mel Recchia. Mel will determine your suitability for treatment and the number of treatments required to obtain optimum results.

The actual treatment involves injecting the affected capillaries with a ‘sclerosing’ agent. This causes the vein walls to become ‘sticky’ meaning blood can no longer pass through. This results in the capillaries collapsing and becoming reabsorbed by the body. This is a completely safe procedure and there is no harm caused by collapsing these capillaries.

How long does the treatment take?

Each treatment takes around 45 – 60 minutes to complete and you may need a course of treatment to achieve your desired result. The number of treatments will be discussed at your consultation.

How long will the effects last?

Immediately following treatment the treated thread veins will no longer be visible. However, over the next few days small scabs will form on the surface of your skin where the veins were visible. These will be present for a few days but eventually will heal and naturally fall off. At this point, your practitioner will want to see you to see if any further treatment is required. On average, the results of the treatment will last for around 18 months – 2 years after which you may need to come back and see your practitioner for a repeat treatment.
