What is Botox for sweating?
Botox injections have long been used as an effective treatment for excessive sweating. Excessive sweating also known as hyperhidrosis is defined as an excessive and non-physiological amount of sweat produced by the body. The treatment works by decreasing the transmission of the nerve impulses to the sweat glands, in turn decreasing the amount you sweat.
Most patients choose this treatment if they have found anti-perspirants no longer work to decrease sweating.
Where can be treated?
At Aurora Skin Clinics we use Botox injections to minimise excessive sweating in the armpits. This treatment can also be used for the soles of the feet and palms of the hands however due to the discomfort and downtime in these areas we do not offer this treatment for the hands and feet at Aurora Skin Clinics.
What does Botox for sweating treatment involve?
If you suffer from excessive sweating and decide to go ahead with this treatment then you will need to ensure your armpits are shaved 2-3 days prior to injection as it is then easier to identify the areas that are severely affected by excessive sweating. The area should also be clean to see which parts are sweating the most and therefore which parts to concentrate on.
During the treatment you will lay down with your head on your arms in order for your practitioner to determine accurately which areas need the most treatment.
A starch-iodine test will be performed. This involves firstly applying an iodine solution to the armpit and then sprinkling starch over the solution. The starch-iodine combination will turn a dark blue colour indicating which areas have excess sweat production.
Your practitioner will then apply a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) to the area and leave it for approximately 20 minutes. They will then begin a series of small Botox injections on the skin to cover the whole region. There may be some discomfort during the procedure as the injections are inserted.
How long does the treatment take?
The whole appointment will take approximately 1 hour to complete.
How long will the results last?
After the treatment you are able to go home and resume your normal activities but you will feel slightly bruised in the treated region. You will begin noticing the reduction in the amount you sweat about a week after treatment. You may not need to use deodorants but if you feel you need to this is perfectly safe.
If after two weeks you still experience excessive sweating then you may visit us again for another consultation where we may do another starch-iodine test and a repeat treatment may be carried out to treat any missed areas.
The results of this treatment generally last about 6 to 9 months, which is much longer than the results from Botox injections for anti-wrinkle purposes. However, the effects can differ between each individual. For optimal results you should visit your practitioner at the clinic every 6 months for repeat treatments to avoid excessive sweating returning in the future.
The price of this treatment starts at £500 for both underarms but you will need to visit us for a consultation to determine an exact price.
