What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to the discolouration of the skin and can occur anywhere on the body.
What are the causes?
There are a number of reasons why pigmentation may occur including:
- Hormonal pigmentation which can occur in pregnancy and is often referred to as melasma
- Previous episodes of acne causing pigmentation marks
- Certain medications such as some types of contraceptive pill
- UV damage from the sun
Pigment producing cells should be nicely even in horizontal layers, but under extreme conditions they tend to bunch into vertical lines which is how you get a patch of discolouration on the top of the skin.
Treatment for pigmentation
The ability to treat different types of pigmentation is dependent on the cause.
Generally, pigmentation can be managed by Chemical Skin Peels and using pigment suppressing products.
It is important to be aware of UV rays and wear an SPF sun protection cream on a daily basis to reduce the risk of pigmentation. SPF’s do not only protect you from direct sun exposure but they also have the ability to reduce free radical damage and lessen the potential of environmental damage.
