Reducing Skin Pigmentation by Vicki Newman
As we are all returning from our summer trips away and the weather is starting to feel cooler – have you taken some time to consider how your skin may have been affected?
This patient has kindly allowed us to document her pigmentation treatment journey.
From as early as your childhood to today; Sun Exposure will affect your skin. UVA rays age your skin which is something we never want to encourage. UVB rays burn the skin resulting your melanin, which is your natural skin protection barrier (tanning) not being able to work as fast meaning that your skin will burn and turn red instead of brown.
When your skin burns, pigmentation marks scar the deeper layers of the skin. These pigmentation marks can often remain unseen but they can also be triggered to appear through the top layers of your skin due to hormones or ageing. Typically as we age our skin gets thinner, this means there is a low cell turnover allowing the deeper layers to come through to reveal the sun damage from years gone past.
UV Damage is what stimulates freckles and moles to appear when exposed to sunlight. It is a good indication to know where to really put your SPF cream as well as know the more vulnerable areas to prone to pigmentation.
Here is damaged pigmentation which has now surfaced as an age spot it would have gradually darkened and expanded over time as the skin aged and became thinner. We can never guarantee to remove an age spot from the skin however using Active Cosmeceutical Products morning and night, wearing an SPF 50 everyday and doing Chemical Peels we can dramatically reduce the visible appearance.
Product & Treatment Recommendations
For Sun Damage to improve a set routine must be followed, this includes using recommended cosmeceutical products every morning and evening for 2 weeks before and in between Chemical Peels.
Here are the products and treatment that we recommended to our patient.
|Neostrata Enlighten Brightening Cleanser
The cleanser stimulates cell renewal and prepares the skin for maximum treatment.
The key ingredient NeoGlucosamine is a non acid amino sugar that gradually and gently exfoliates dark spots as well as the surface cells that create the skin to look dull. This should then leave the skin looking lighter and brighter.
|Neostrata Enlighten Pigment Controller
This moisturiser will lighten and prevent future dark spots appearing on the skin.
The combination of active ingredients NeoGlucasamine, Retinol and Vitamin C work together to increase cell turnover and diminish the appearance of discoloration of dark spots or pigmentation already on skin. Alpine Plant extracts and SabiWhite work to prevent anymore new pigmentation forming in future.
|Heliocare Advanced Gel
The must have protection and prevention for every month of every year!
Heliocare is a physical Sun Protection Factor meaning as soon as it is applied to the skin it will instantly start working, many SPF’s are chemical which means they can take from 20-40minutes to start working resulting your skin not being protected once you’ve applied it.
|Chemical Peels will chemically exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin to help fade pigmentation. There are different types of peels to suit different concerns, for pigmentation we would build up skin on a Glycolic Peel and then progress and combine it with a Citric Peel. It is unpredictable as to how many treatments are needed to suit expectations, it is advisable to book a course of 3 or 6 treatments to begin with to see a visible difference.
Patient Continuous use of Cosmeceutical Products and Neostrata Peels
Pigmentation has lifted, surface skin cells initially showing the darker pigmentation has became dry, flaked and faded lighter in between every x3 peels done every 2 weeks
Pigmentation, moles and freckles are more spread out if not reduced or disappeared. UV Spots will always be active with in the skin however the heliocare has reduced the amount and depth of them. Brown spots are still present underneath the top layers of the skin however the products and treatments have supressed them and keeping up the product routine and coming for regular treatments ( 4-6 weeks) then skin should keep this result.
It is not always possible to reverse sun damage but we can improve and reduce.
