Getting rid of acne
The good news, however, is that there is no reason to let acne continue, in the hope that nature will take its course and the angry, bumpy redness will calm down of its own accord.
Depending on the severity of the acne there are various steps that you can take in order to banish unsightly pimples for good.
Over-the-counter creams and lotions
These usually consist of benzoyl peroxide as their main ingredient which works by shedding dead skin cells and the effectiveness of its antibacterial properties. They will help to reduce the appearance of existing spots and stop new ones forming. Side-effects may include redness or peeling of the skin, and they may take weeks or even months to start taking effect.
Prescribed creams and lotions
The next step is to visit your GP where they may prescribe a cream or lotion before opting for a course of antibiotics. It will be one of three types – azelaic acid, retinjoids or antibiotic lotions – which one will depend on the severity of your skin (or if you are pregnant, as you can apply retinoids if you are).
You may need to take a course of antibiotics which will be either tetracycline of doxycycline and for a minimum of 8 weeks. It’s possible that you may need to stay on them for around d 6 months, or up to two years in severe cases.
If you are female it may be that a course of the oral pill will help, as it may restore the hormone balance required to get your skin back to normal.
If you feel you want a solution that will work more quickly than the above options then a course of microdermabrasion could be for you. Working by removing the top of layer skin through blasting it with microcrystals it removes the bacteria that causes the acne.
Chemical peels will produce the same effect, however they use the application of a mild acid solution to the skin to remove the cells.
