Fat freezing treatment coming soon!
Cryolipolysis, or fat freezing treatment, sounds like sci-fi but it’s real – and it works. The treatment is non-surgical, quick, safe and removes stubborn fat. And it’s coming to a clinic near you. Read on…
How does fat freezing treatment work?
The treatment works by super-cooling fat cells so they break down and are harmlessly reabsorbed by the body.
It’s based on a discovery made by two dermatologists, Dr Dieter Manstein and Dr Rox Anderson, working at the teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
Under lab conditions on willing subjects, they found that when they cooled tissue to -9°C, it affected the fat cells while leaving the surrounding tissue untouched.
They realised the technique could be used to selectively reduce fat, and an aesthetic treatment was born.
What happens during treatment?
Treatment is a simple non-invasive process, performed with a state-of-the-art cooling machine.
The machine’s applicator head is placed onto the area being treated, and you’ll feel gentle suction pulling in the fatty tissue so it’s between the cooling units.
The first phase of treatment is to gently warm up the area, and the second is to cool it to -9°C. Treatment for each area takes around 60 minutes.
Where does all the fat go!?
The cooling kickstarts a process called ‘apoptosis’ in the fat cells, which basically means they start to die off. Over the following weeks and months the cells dissolve, before being safely removed from the body through the lymphatic system.
Which areas can be treated?
Like fat removal with liposuction, fat freezing treatment can be used on almost all areas of the body. Most popular areas are the belly, flanks, thighs, arms and back.
Does it hurt?
No, treatment is completely painless. No anaesthetics are used or needed during fat freezing treatment. You’ll probably experience a slight sensation of coolness and pressure in the first few minutes, but that usually wears off quickly.
How many treatments are needed?
Most patients require 2 treatments to each area to get the best results.
What’s the recovery period?
Immediately after your treatment, you may have some redness and minor skin irritation. And for the first few days, you may feel slightly numb and pressure-sensitive in the treated areas.
But you should still be able to return to all normal activities, including work, sports, etc immediately after treatment with no problems.
What results can I expect?
For a non-surgical treatment, results can be impressive. The volume of fat in treated areas can be reduced by up to 30%. The first results will be noticeable after 3-4 weeks, with final results being seen after 2-3 months.
Are there any risks/side effects?
As with all treatment, there are risks, however small. In very rare cases, swelling and haematoma can occur. But these are highly unlikely, and most importantly are not harmful and will resolve quickly.
Since the process of fat breakdown is very slow, there are also no issues with liver function or blood lipids.
How much does fat freezing treatment cost?
First and second treatments cost £400 each, and if a third treatment is needed, it will be at a reduced cost of £200.
Where and when is it available?
