Can Botox help migraine sufferers?
Before Botox was administered in the fight against wrinkles it was used to help those suffering from over-active sweat glands in the armpits.
Since those early origins, it is now mostly used for reversing the signs of ageing. It has recently become associated with a new medical purpose however – use in the treatment of migraines.
A key pioneer of this treatment is Consultant Neurologist Dr Fayaz Ahmed, who practices in Hull, East Yorkshire.
Encouraged by scientific discovery in to the link between Botox and migraine relief, he has started to use the injections for his migraine patients and the treatment is showing signs of success.
Of the patients he has treated so far around 70% have experienced a reduction in the number of migraines they are suffering from by about 50% or more.
Migraines can be a chronic condition that can have a distressing effect on lives; with over 8 million sufferers in the UK any treatment that will help reduce or alleviate suffering will be a triumph.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently approved of Botox use for medical purposes within the NHS.
