Move over Olympics – Botox celebrates its 10 year anniversary this year
With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics taking centre stage on the “big things happening in 2012” front, you’ll be forgiven for having missed another important event that happened this year.
But it was ten years ago that the world of anti-ageing skin treatments was changed forever.
In April 2002, the US Food and Drug Administration licensed Botulinum Toxin to be used to treat moderate to severe frown lines. A development that has since taken the world by storm – so much so that it’s difficult to remember life before Botox.
But it had taken a while to get there.
Previously licensed by the FDA in 1989 as a treatment for eye muscle disorders, Botulinum Toxin was additionally approved in December 2000 to treat cervical dystonia, a neurological condition causing severe neck and shoulder contractions.
However, its uses as a highly effective muscle relaxant meant it was only a matter of time before Botox was harnessed to treat the dynamic lines caused by muscle contraction on the face. And so a cosmetic phenomenon was born…
Happy birthday Botox.
