Add to your skincare routine with products already in the home

Skin treatmentSkin care treatments and over-the-counter or prescribed topical treatments often carry a justifiably high price tag as they use complex ingredients or processes that do much to rejuvenate the skin’s surface and help to keep it glowing and healthy. All of which is a prized result in a society that places value on beauty and youthful looks.

Alongside a more considered approach there are also inexpensive household products that can surprisingly complement a skin care routine and that will also have a positive impact on the condition of the skin:

This cheap product is extremely versatile and can help with a number of skin complaints throughout life – from helping to reduce the inflammation that comes with acne to treating ageing and dehydrated skin. Once you have applied your night moisturiser apply a thin layer to the skin overnight and you’ll soon start to see its hydrating effects. Vaseline is also great for chapped lips – perfect for this time of year.

Lemons contain acid which means that they can work as a gentle exfoliator and toner, which again makes it suitable both for blemished skin and ageing skin. Cut a lemon in half and apply to the surface of your face following your cleansing routine.

Although it should be used sparingly as it can really dry out the skin, toothpaste can be a great quick fix for spots. Apply to the affected area for 5-10 minutes and then wash off. The astringent ingredients in toothpaste will help to reduce inflammation and contract the pore.

Honey is well-known for its anti-bacterial properties which makes it a great base for home made face masks. Mix with some sugar for an exfoliating scrub or with avocado and oats for a hydrating mask.
