3 reliable ways to get natural results from Botox treatment
Botox – when it’s good, it’s great. But it’s a treatment that’s only as good as the practitioner offering it. If you’re thinking about Botox treatment, following these 3 tips will make sure you get a great natural result.
1. Research your practitioner
Botox is the world’s favourite non-surgical procedure, and consequently, it’s everywhere.
No doubt you’ve heard about the phenomenon of ‘Botox parties’ , where friends gather at one of their houses and have communal Botox injections – kind of like a modern Tupperware party.
It wasn’t like this in the eighties…
Because Botox is so popular, there are lots of people offering it. And statistically, though that means there are lots of great practitioners, there are also quite a few not-so-great ones.
Which is why it’s imperative to check the credentials of anyone you’re trusting to treat you.
Incredibly, while Botox can only be prescribed by a qualified Doctor or Prescribing Nurse, it can still legally be injected by people with NO medical training.
Given this crazy situation, your own vigilance is key to making sure you get the results you want from Botox treatment.
Always choose a medical professional to treat you – a Doctor, Nurse, Surgeon or Dentist. They’re the only ones who’ll have the required knowledge of facial anatomy. Double check their qualifications on the website of their relevant professional body – for example, the GMC, NMC or GDC.
But don’t stop there. Find out if they’ve had specialist training in administering Botox for aesthetic purposes.
You can check to see if they’re a member of any organisations like the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM), British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN), or British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD).
And if you can’t find out by yourself, ask them.
Also look online for before and after photos of patients they’ve treated. And ask them to show you some when you’re at your consultation too.
You need to be sure that your idea of natural results is the same as theirs!
2. Consider having Botox treatment in stages
Choosing a medically and aesthetically qualified Botox practitioner is your surest route to getting great results.
But if you’ve found a practitioner who fits the bill, yet you’re still concerned about looking frozen and unnatural, you can have staged appointments.
Injecting Botox in stages is a conservative, “baby steps” approach that will yield the same results, but spread out over several appointments rather than just one.
Explain your concerns to your practitioner, and they’ll be able to come up with a treatment schedule. Perhaps injecting a very small amount every 2 weeks until you get the results you’re looking for.
It can take 10-14 days for Botox treatment to properly kick in, so treating it as a gradual process and assessing results every 2 weeks allows you to see improvements bit by bit – and exercise more control over your final result.
3. Follow your aftercare instructions to the letter
Your Botox treatment isn’t really over until you’ve recovered from any swelling or bruising and seen your final results.
So to make sure nothing is compromised in the hours and days after your treatment, you need to take care of yourself.
Your practitioner will give you instructions, but sometimes it can be difficult to remember in the clinic environment.
Essentially, you need to take it easy for the first 4-5 hours after Botox treatment to make sure the Botox stays where it’s needed. Get comfy (sitting not lying down), and chill out – trying your best to avoid rubbing the treated areas.
For the first 24 hours, avoid any strenuous activity and anything else that increases your heart rate or makes you excessively hot (saunas, hot baths etc).
Do gently apply ice packs if you need them to help with swelling, and Arnica to help with bruising.
And use your facial muscles to practise your normal range of facial expressions – you might look crazy but it’s a small price to pay for a cracking result!
